Manufacture of Natural Cork Stoppers/Discs

Reception / Store of cork planks

The cork must be stored in batteries constructed in a rectangular shape or in bulk, but always positioned so as to facilitate air circulation between them. After the harvest, the cork should stabilize at least 6 months before being subjected to firing to stabilize the raw material.

Preparation of cork - Boiling

Total immersion of planks in water at 100 ° C to clean cork, to extract water-soluble substances, to increase the thickness and elasticity, and smooth boards.

Following a period of stabilization after cooking for flattening planks and let stand cork enough so that it acquires a consistency and uniform moisture content, which allow tracing.

Selection of Cork Planks

Cork stoppers classification intended for industry; separation of all cork defective and unfit for use in the manufacture of stoppers / disks.

Are made lots of cork planks defined by thickness and quality (visual aspect).

Trimming (Cuting into strips)

Cutting operation of planks prepared in various cross sections for the manufacture of stoppers / disks.

Punching of Cork stoppers / Discs

Cut the cork with a drill for a stopper / disk without deformation in the dimensional limits required.

Operation of reducing the moisture content by thermal treatment of stoppers / semi-manufactured disc in order to ensure adequate moisture to maintain dimensional stability of stoppers / disks.

Process Production - Technical Cork Manufacture

Trituration / Granulation

Operation consisting in grinding cork fragmentation for cork granules according to the size of the granules. The granules obtained are then separated according to their density.

Improving the organoleptic neutrality of the granulate

The process of cleaning / extract any volatile compounds to improve the organoleptic neutrality of cork granules.

Bonding cork granulate, typically by polymerization heat, with binders and additives to form agglomerated cork stoppers.

Gluing of discs

Collage of natural cork disks in a body of agglomerated cork.

Finishing of stoppers

Dimensional Rectification of Cork stoppers

Mechanical polishing operations to ensure the dimensional specifications of the stoppers / disks.

Selection of stoppers

Operation which consists in separating stoppers / disks in a number of visual classes and secrete the stoppers / defective disks in accordance with a sample or internal reference standard customer quality.

Washing / Drying

Set of operations for cleaning, dust removal and disinfection of corks. Immersion of the corks in a hydrogen peroxide solution that can have different concentrations giving a natural coloring or bleaching the cork stoppers.

After disinfection follows that final drying is to reduce, by heat treatment, the moisture content of the cork to ensure good mechanical behavior and a good microbial stability.

Colmation / Coating

The sealing consists in sealing the lenticels of the cork stoppers washed with a mixture consisting solely of grinding dust from the stopper or cork discs and glue in order to improve the presentation of the natural cork stoppers and obtain a better seal corking.

The surface coating is to coat the surface of the stopper with a pigment to smooth the surface color and enhance the sealing of the corking.

Marking / Surface Treatment

The marking consists in printing on the surface of the stopper of a text or logo as well as supplier code and countermark. This way you can personalize the stoppers and assure their traceability.

The surface treatment consists of depositing on the surface of the stopper a paraffin film and / or silicone oil to the surface of the stopper, to facilitate its introduction in the bottle and the subsequent extraction and to improve the seal.
